Explore the phenomena of pareidolia, which is the interpretation of random shapes and objects into recognisable stories and things, like when we see an animal in a cloud, or a face on a slice of toast Each sculpture is a dance between intention and serendipity, a fusion of the artistic vision and the unexpected detours that emerge as I work. Each work is moulded, carved or assembled in the hope of evoking the viewer's sense of curiosity and wonder.
Paul Dunkerley - with some news about his upcoming appearance at the @mcrartfair November 17th to 19th 2023 @ Manchester Central stand 957
Twelve abstracted faces, cast in bronze & resin, mounted on an original hand painted abstract wooden support. AKA - The Dirty Dozen.
The work commemorates the endless parade of reluctant zoom-call faces that have greeted us ever since lockdown.
This video shows me workng on a scaled up version of Tantric.
From digital 3D scan to CNC foam model
Broken ground evolved from a studio experiment where the blocks fell to the ground and the unique spaces and structures that were created became the backdrop for this unique composition of characters[endSpeech]
A personal fave of mine. Arriving at a point, only to reflect on the road travelled and where the next step will lead
Artificial Nature is a series of free form relief sculptures that explore the phenomena of pareidolia (seeing familiar objects or patterns in otherwise random or unrelated objects or patterns). The forms evolve as the light and the material play. As the mind tries to make sense of the unfamiliar, a unique emotional association is created
Some people see a papoose like structure that is holding or cradling a less developed form
inspires different connections from different people.

Distraction is a free form relief sculpture cast in Jesmonite resin.
In Spring 2023, I was diagnosed with a rare abdominal cancer. This work was a deliberate attempt to distract my thoughts from the prescribed surgery and treatment.
Although this interwoven, folding form is shaped through instinct, my subconscious clearly played it's part in producing a composition that resembles the intestinal tract I was trying to avoid thinking or talking about.
Figurative wall relief, cast by the artist in Jesmonite resin, primed, painted and sealed. Hidden Meaning is a figurative work depicting two embracing abstract figures. It's down to the discretion and imagination of the viewer to interpret the nature of the embrace.
Pareidolia is a free form relief sculptures that continues to explore the artist's interest in the phenomena of pareidolia (where people find the familiar in otherwise random or unrelated objects or patterns).
The forms are shaped instinctively through the interplay of material and light. As the viewer's mind tries to make sense of the unfamiliar, a unique emotional association is also created
Cast in either plaster or bronze resin, this abstract sculpture depicts two cradled figures forming a supportive shield.
Shreds is a free form relief sculpture cast in Jesmonite resin.
This composition of a flowing, ribbon-based form, has evolved over 6 months. Different sections were modelled, moulded and cast until all 'played nicely together' in this unusual composition.
The bather is a free-standing abstract sculpture depicting woman washing her hair as she bathes. The fusion of water, hair and body become a singular moment. This work was a small study for a larger garden commission.
Common Ground & Superheroes are from my 'Soundboard' collection. The origin was an accident involvin the temporary use of an acoustic diffuser board (aka soundboard) as a resting place for some small sculpture macquettes. The prototype got caught in the background while I was on a BBC TV show, and very quickly they became what I was known for. I can't explain how or why, but at the same time as the wooden soundboard reduces audio signals, it also seems to amplifying the visual ones. Common Ground: A collection of back stories from the people who became my clients. SuperHeroes - inspired by the sketches of Henry Moore & Barbara Hepworth - the works that never becam sculptures.
