Paul has been been creating and producing semi-abstract sculpture for the past 12 years, and for the last 3 years has been based in a tranquil part of rural Cheshire near Nantwich. His workshop/studio at Gate Farm Enterprise Park was once the farm's cattle loosebox and the name stuck.
If you want to visit, please make an appointment in advance as it is a small working studio (not a retail unit or gallery) and that would give me a chance to clean up any mess and prepare before you arrive!
Paul identifies as Mancunian, Creative and Musical. His back story starts in the working class council estates of Wythenshawe at a time of huge upheaval in the political and education systems of the country. During that time Art & Music were the only constants. He eventually went on to study Art at University where he was first seduced (not literally) by the great twentieth century contemporary sculptors such as Moore & Hepworth.
Somewhere in between then and now, "Life happened". For Paul, that life line featured unemployment, loss, re-employment, marriage, fatherhood, redundancy, career changes, emigration, immigration and more recently appearing on BBC's Home Is Where The Art Is in 2019 as a winning artist.
"It's more about instinct than planning. I start with a few loose ideas bashing around my head, which I make into a clay form. A preliminary mould and plaster cast is made (the hard plaster allows me to try out different ideas and textures). I then make a final silicone mould and then cast and finish by hand."
The end product is a stylised, abstract work, cast in a range of materials including wood, resin, metal or stone
